Court Tug-of-War: MV Sullivan Remains Submerged

Spread the love

The MV Sullivan, which sank in Suva Harbour, will remain in its current position due to an ongoing court case between Fiji Ports Ltd and the vessel’s owner, Venu Shipping (Fiji) Ltd. The chief executive officer of the Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji (MSAF), Joeli Cawaki, provided updates on the situation, confirming that discussions had taken place with the managing director of Venu Shipping, Ben Naidu.

The incident with the MV Sullivan occurred back in 2015, and since then, the matter has been in litigation. Currently, Fiji Ports is contesting Venu Shipping to take action to remove the submerged vessel. Cawaki stated that both parties are waiting for legal proceedings to unfold and emphasized the importance of completing all necessary documentation for a proper resolution.

As the case progresses, a legal review will ultimately determine responsibility for the incident. This situation highlights the complexities surrounding maritime incidents and their implications on commercial operations and safety standards.

In the midst of this legal challenge, it’s hopeful to see the parties engaging in dialogue, which may pave the way for a resolution that ensures the safety and integrity of the harbour while addressing the needs of those involved.
