Spread the love

Justice Minister Siromi Turaga has urged that allegations made by former elections supervisor Mohammed Saneem regarding his treatment while in police custody should be evaluated by the court. During a recent interview in Cuvu, Nadroga, Mr. Turaga stated that the judicial system is equipped to handle these claims.

Saneem, who previously described his experience in the Suva Magistrate’s Court as inhumane and degrading, spoke of sharing a cell with a disruptive individual and encountering rats while lying on a dirty mattress. In response, Mr. Turaga emphasized that such conditions may be typical in police custody, particularly in countries with different systems of governance. He noted that significant improvements have been made in custodial conditions over the years.

Mr. Turaga acknowledged Saneem’s grievances but reiterated the importance of allowing the court to reach a verdict on December 17. He emphasized that the former supervisor’s claims will be met with counterarguments from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), and stressed that the case will be resolved based on the evidence presented.

This situation highlights the ongoing efforts to enhance the justice system and the importance of addressing concerns about prisoner rights. As the legal proceedings unfold, there is hope for a fair and just outcome, which could lead to further improvements in the treatment of individuals in detention.

In summary, the Justice Minister has called for patience as the court prepares to assess the claims made by former elections supervisor Mohammed Saneem regarding his treatment in custody. The decision, expected in December, will importantly determine the legitimacy of these claims within the legal framework.
