Three men have been remanded by Suva’s Magistrates Court on serious charges related to drug possession and assault. Lemeki Baleiwai, 29, Maciu Jiuta, 27, and Asaeli Susewa, 23, faced Resident Magistrate Sufia Hamza during a court session this afternoon.
Baleiwai is charged with one count of possession of illicit drugs, specifically marijuana, while Jiuta and Susewa face charges of serious assault for allegedly attacking two police officers during a raid. The police prosecutor informed the court that full disclosures had been provided to the accused, which their defense team confirmed obtaining.
The case has been set for a bail hearing and further mention in Court Four on November 29.
This situation underscores the ongoing challenges law enforcement faces in combating drug-related offenses and violence. However, it also highlights the judicial process, which ensures that defendants have access to legal representation and the opportunity for a fair hearing. The upcoming court dates provide a crucial chance for resolution in this case, and it’s hopeful that it may contribute to broader discussions on community safety and rehabilitation.
