Three men have been remanded by Suva’s Magistrates Court on serious charges, including the possession of illicit drugs and assaulting police officers. The individuals—Lemeki Baleiwai, 29, Maciu Jiuta, 27, and Asaeli Susewa, 23—appeared in front of Resident Magistrate Sufia Hamza.
Baleiwai is specifically charged with possession of marijuana, which was discovered on him during a raid on November 18, 2024. In a troubling turn of events, Jiuta and Susewa reportedly assaulted two police officers during this operation.
During the court proceedings, the Police Prosecutor confirmed that all necessary disclosures related to the case have been provided to the defense, which acknowledged their receipt. The case will return to Court Four for a bail hearing and further mention on November 29.
This situation highlights ongoing issues with drug possession and law enforcement in the community. However, it also illustrates the legal system’s commitment to addressing these serious offenses and ensuring that justice is pursued. With the upcoming court date, there is hope that a resolution will provide clarity and potentially serve as a deterrent for similar future incidents.
