The Suva Magistrate’s Court has issued a bench warrant for Isikeli Komaisavai, the former vice-president of the Social Democratic Liberal Party (SODELPA) in Nasinu, after he failed to attend his scheduled hearing. Komaisavai, 52, faces a charge of causing harm through electronic communication.
The charges stem from an incident that occurred on February 10, 2021, in Suva, where Komaisavai allegedly made threatening remarks on Facebook regarding Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, the then Attorney-General, suggesting he should be killed.
During the court proceedings, police prosecutor Sharmila Lata informed Magistrate Jeremaia Savou that all expected witnesses were present, except for the defendant. Lata requested that the trial continue in Komaisavai’s absence, which the court approved. Notably, among those summoned to testify was Mr. Sayed-Khaiyum himself.
The case has been postponed until December 17, at which point a judgment will be delivered.
While it is concerning that a public official is facing such serious allegations, it is also a reminder of the legal system’s function in addressing and adjudicating matters of public safety. As the justice process unfolds, it serves the community’s interest to ensure accountability and uphold the law.
Summary: A bench warrant has been issued for Isikeli Komaisavai, a former SODELPA vice-president, due to his absence at a court hearing regarding charges linked to threatening social media comments. The case is set to continue in December, pointing to the judicial system’s commitment to dealing with such serious allegations.
