Court Drama Unfolds in High-Stakes Fiji Bombing Compensation Case

Veronica Malani’s attorney, Sitiveni Raikanikoda, has been granted 14 days to submit an affidavit in response to the strike-out application filed by Neelraj Sharma, a former lawyer with the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP). This civil case was heard by Justice Usaia Ratuvili at the High Court in Suva and revolves around a compensation claim of $800,244 million, involving 11 individuals linked to the investigation of the alleged 1987 bombing case in 2020.

The defendants in the case include both former and current officials from the Fiji Police Force, along with the Director of Public Prosecutions. During the proceedings, Ronald Singh, representing Mr. Sharma, informed the court about their motion to withdraw his client from the case, emphasizing that Sharma is now employed by Munroe Leys Lawyers.

Justice Ratuvili instructed Mr. Raikanikoda to address the application and to indicate whether he possesses evidence regarding his client’s involvement. Additionally, Mr. Raikanikoda raised concerns over the absence of representation for two defendants, both of whom are retired civil servants, including former Acting Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu and retired assistant Police Commissioner Biu Matavou.

Justice Ratuvili noted that the Office of the Attorney-General would need to provide clarification on this matter in upcoming proceedings. The case has been adjourned until October 9 for further mention.
