Former Fisheries and Forests Minister Kalaveti Ravu was notably absent from court proceedings today, where he faces a charge of abuse of office. He is being charged alongside Tekata Toaisi, the former Regional Manager North, who appeared in the Suva Magistrates Court before Magistrate Jeremaia Savou.
During the session, FICAC Counsel Lavenia Ravuikadavu expressed that the court was not informed of Ravu’s absence. She emphasized that should Ravu fail to appear for the next hearing, the prosecution may seek a bench warrant for his arrest.
Toaisi’s lawyer, Jioji Cakau, clarified that Ravu’s absence was due to his attendance at a Parliament Committee Meeting in Nadi. Cakau also mentioned that Ravu’s legal team intends to submit the necessary pre-trial documents and disclosures to FICAC by this Friday.
The allegations against Ravu indicate that from July 25 to August 31, 2023, he is said to have interfered in a Ministry of Forestry investigation concerning the illegal trade of prohibited beche-de-mer species. Toaisi is accused of aiding and abetting Ravu in this misuse of authority.
The case has been adjourned until the 21st of this month for further mention, and the trial is scheduled for February.
This legal matter continues to underscore the importance of upholding integrity in public office. As the proceedings unfold, there is potential for increased scrutiny of public officials’ actions in relation to environmental protection laws, paving the way for a more accountable governance structure.
