The Magistrates Court in Nadi has ruled against granting bail to a 24-year-old farmer, Ilaisa Tanoa Degei, who faces serious charges of rape and sexual assault involving a crew member from Virgin Airlines.
During a court appearance this afternoon, Degei was formally charged with one count of sexual assault and one count of rape. The court’s decision to deny bail was influenced by the nature of the charges, which are classified as indictable offences. As a result, the case will proceed to the High Court in Lautoka, where it is set to be heard again on January 20.
This case highlights the judicial system’s commitment to addressing serious allegations and ensuring the safety of individuals in the community. The decision to transfer the matter to a higher court underscores the gravity of the situation and the importance of a thorough legal process in such serious matters.
