The hopes to hear the ‘no case to answer’ ruling for Simione Rasova and Peceli Vosanibola have been delayed once again, as the Suva Magistrate’s Court postponed the case yesterday. FICAC lawyer Josanne Pene appeared in court with the two defendants, anticipating a favorable outcome. Unfortunately, they were informed that Magistrate Pulekeria Low was not ready to deliver the ruling.

The case has now been rescheduled for November 22. Both Rasova and Vosanibola, former members of the Social Democratic Liberal Party (SODELPA), are facing charges of abuse of office by FICAC.

This marks the 15th time Rasova’s ruling has been postponed. He is charged with providing false information to a public servant, specifically for allegedly misrepresenting his residence to gain financial benefits. Rasova claimed his permanent residence was in Nasenivolau, Nabouwalu village, Ono, Kadavu Island, which enabled him to improperly receive $21,350 between July 2019 and April 2020.

Vosanibola’s case, now in its third adjournment, involves one count of giving false information and obtaining financial advantage. He allegedly misrepresented his residence as being in Navuloa village, Bureta, Ovalau, resulting in him receiving $19,749.50 between August 2019 and March 2020. Additionally, he is charged with violating the Parliamentary Remuneration Act 2014 by claiming unauthorized travel and accommodation allowances.

The rulings for Rasova and Vosanibola are now scheduled for October 30 and October 31, respectively.

In summary, while the repeated delays in the court decisions are undoubtedly frustrating for all involved, it is important to remember that the judicial process is thorough and aims to ensure justice is served accurately. Hopefully, as the new dates approach, there will be resolutions that provide clarity and progression for both individuals and the broader community.
