Digicel Junior Bula Boys Head Coach Marika Rodu has commended his team’s effort following their narrow 1-0 defeat to New Zealand in the semifinals of the OFC U19 Men’s Championship in Apia, Samoa yesterday.
An emotional yet proud Rodu remarked that while the performance met their expectations, the result did not go their way.
“We knew that facing New Zealand in the semifinal would be challenging. Our plan was to create our own moves and attack from chaotic situations. I think we did very well in creating opportunities and defending excellently throughout the game.”
“They scored immediately after halftime, and we unfortunately missed a penalty shortly after, which could have leveled the match despite having several scoring chances.”
“It is what it is. All I can say is hats off to the boys. They gave a very, very good performance.”
Rodu highlighted that the players adhered to the game plan, demonstrating their courage and belief in their abilities against formidable teams like New Zealand.
“I hope they view this performance as the start of a new chapter in their playing careers.”
“From a personal coaching perspective, I always enjoy playing against New Zealand as it pushes me out of my comfort zone, making me consider my style of play and how I can enhance it. Yesterday was a great moment to apply our football principles.”
“I believe a lapse in concentration led to conceding the goal. Nonetheless, I always embrace matches against New Zealand because they are worthy opponents in the Oceania region and serve as a benchmark.”
“It’s been a great journey spending six weeks with the boys, who have worked extremely hard to reach this stage.”
Rodu and his team will be back on the field on Thursday, facing the Solomon Islands in the third place playoff.
