Vasemaca Garnett was recently honored with the General Service Medal for his service in Iraq, as announced two months ago. The General Service Medal is awarded to members of the Fijian military for their contributions during various deployments, and the UNAMI medal is bestowed by the United Nations for service in Iraq.
Garnett is part of a contingent of 135 Fijian troops that have been actively deployed for peacekeeping missions in Iraq over the past year. Hailing from the Rewa region, Vasemaca expressed that he isn’t overly concerned with the medal since he believes the primary focus should be on the duty and work performed.
He demonstrated pride in receiving the medal, emphasizing that it is a recognition of his efforts and his commitment to service. Despite the distance from Fiji, he noted the valuable support he receives from his family during challenging times, which includes dealing with obstacles associated with long deployments.
Vasemaca highlighted the importance of resilience, urging young women to persevere through difficulties and to work diligently. A total of 20 women also received the medal alongside him for their contributions during this mission in Iraq.
In summary, Garnett’s recognition illustrates the dedication and resilience of Fijian military personnel serving abroad, and shines a light on the teamwork and familial support that sustains them during their deployments. This spirit of camaraderie and strength highlights the significant contributions made by these brave individuals, as they work toward maintaining peace and stability in challenging environments.
