Couple Celebrates Graduation Milestone: A Journey of Dreams and Sacrifices

Shalvin Kumar and Sheema Lata, a teaching couple at the University of the South Pacific, celebrated a significant milestone during last Friday’s graduation ceremony in Suva. Mr. Kumar, 29, earned his Bachelor of Arts in Law, while Ms. Lata, 26, completed her Master of Arts in Education.

Their journey together over seven years of marriage underscores their belief in lifelong learning. Mr. Kumar noted the balance in their roles as they both teach at the same school, acknowledging that Ms. Lata managed most household responsibilities to give him space to focus on his law studies. He described their online learning experience as challenging, particularly in juggling work and study commitments, but ultimately worth the effort.

Despite facing numerous challenges, the couple remained resolute in their ambitions, clearly motivated to achieve their goals. Both are educators at Seaqaqa Central College. Mr. Kumar faced criticism for transitioning to law studies after previously earning a Bachelor of Arts and a Graduate Certificate in Education.

“My initial degree focused on Literature Language and Geography, and my aspiration was always to be a lawyer. Sadly, when I graduated, there were no scholarships available, so I pursued a degree in education instead,” he explained. After starting his teaching career, he seized the opportunity to study law.

“There was quite a bit of talk about my shift to law, but I chose to ignore the negativity and followed my dreams. Graduating with my law degree proves that determination can lead to success,” Mr. Kumar stated.

Looking ahead, he plans to pursue a master’s in law, while Ms. Lata intends to move to Dubai to continue her teaching career. Mr. Kumar aspires to specialize in criminal law.
