Couple Celebrates Dual Graduation: A Journey of Dreams and Sacrifices!

Shalvin Kumar and Sheema Lata, both educators at the University of the South Pacific, celebrated a significant milestone during the graduation ceremony in Suva last Friday. Mr. Kumar, aged 29, earned his Bachelor of Arts in Law, while Ms. Lata, 26, received her Master of Arts in Education.

The couple, married for seven years, believes their journey together demonstrates the value of lifelong learning. Mr. Kumar acknowledged the balance they maintained in their shared roles as teachers at Seaqaqa Central College, crediting his wife for handling most household responsibilities to allow him time to focus on his studies.

“Studying online posed many challenges, particularly in managing our professional and academic commitments, but the sacrifices made were worth it,” he said.

Despite facing several obstacles, the couple remained determined to succeed. Mr. Kumar had faced criticism regarding his decision to pursue a law degree after previously graduating with a Bachelor of Arts and a Graduate Certificate in Education. He shared, “I received a lot of negative comments about my choice to study law at this age.”

Mr. Kumar’s initial degree focused on Literature, Language, and Geography. He revealed that becoming a lawyer had been his dream for a long time, but he opted for education due to a lack of available scholarships at the time. “Once I began working, I pursued my law degree. Despite the criticism about my change in direction, I followed my dreams, and graduating with my law degree shows that anything is achievable if you are determined,” he said.

Looking ahead, Mr. Kumar intends to pursue a Master’s in Law, while Ms. Lata plans to relocate to Dubai for teaching opportunities. Mr. Kumar aims to specialize in criminal law.
