Couple Celebrates Dual Graduation: A Journey of Dreams and Determination!

Shalvin Kumar and Sheema Lata, a teaching couple, celebrated a significant milestone at the University of the South Pacific graduation in Suva last Friday. Mr. Kumar, aged 29, earned his Bachelor of Arts in Law, while Ms. Lata, 26, received her Master of Arts in Education.

Together for seven years, the couple’s journey has underscored the notion that education is a continuous journey. Mr. Kumar noted their shared responsibilities at the same school, acknowledging his wife’s efforts in managing household duties, which allowed him more time for his law studies. “We studied online, which presented its own challenges in balancing work and study, but it was a sacrifice worth making,” he stated.

Despite the many obstacles they faced, the couple remained committed to their goals, confident in their ability to excel. Both educators at Seaqaqa Central College, they encountered skepticism regarding Mr. Kumar’s decision to study law. He shared that he previously completed a Bachelor of Arts and a Graduate Certificate in Education, receiving criticism for shifting his academic focus later in life.

Mr. Kumar originally majored in Literature Language and Geography and expressed that becoming a lawyer had always been his aspiration. “Due to a lack of scholarships, I opted for an education degree, but as soon as I began earning, I pursued my law degree,” he explained. Despite the negative remarks about his transition to law, Mr. Kumar remained undeterred, emphasizing that his graduation in law illustrates the power of perseverance and determination.

Looking ahead, Mr. Kumar intends to pursue a master’s degree in law, while Ms. Lata plans to relocate to Dubai for teaching opportunities. He dreams of becoming a criminal lawyer.
