Couple Celebrates Double Graduation: A Journey of Dreams and Sacrifice

Shalvin Kumar and Sheema Lata, a teaching couple, celebrated their academic achievements at the University of the South Pacific graduation in Suva last Friday. Mr. Kumar, 29, earned his Bachelor of Arts in Law, while Ms. Lata, 26, received her Master of Arts in Education.

Their seven-year marriage has underscored their belief in lifelong learning. Mr. Kumar acknowledged that while they both taught at the same school, Ms. Lata handled most household responsibilities, giving him more time to focus on his law studies.

The couple faced challenges managing their work life and studying online, but they found the sacrifices worthwhile. Both educators at Seaqaqa Central College, they remained steadfast in their commitment to each other’s success.

Mr. Kumar shared that during his pursuit of a law degree, he encountered skepticism from others. He previously obtained a Bachelor of Arts and a Graduate Certificate in Education, and expressed that pursuing law at his age drew negative comments.

Initially majoring in Literature, Language, and Geography, Mr. Kumar revealed that becoming a lawyer had always been his dream, but a lack of available scholarships led him to education instead. He began his law studies once he started earning as a teacher, maintaining a focus on his goals despite criticism.

Looking ahead, Mr. Kumar intends to pursue a Master’s in Law, while Ms. Lata plans to move to Dubai to continue her teaching career. He aspires to become a criminal lawyer, proving his determination to follow his dreams.
