Coup Culture Erodes Trust in Fiji’s Military and Government

Trust in Fiji’s military has diminished following each coup, impacting not only the military but also the government and police forces, according to the National Security and Defence Review (NSDR). The NSDR report highlighted concerns from stakeholders, who indicated that the immunity provisions in the 2013 Constitution have fostered a “coup culture” that is detrimental to Fiji.

The report acknowledged that military leaders have come to recognize the serious repercussions of coups on state stability, national development, and social cohesion. It also praised the Republic of Fiji Military Forces for its involvement in the internal reconciliation process.

Home Affairs Minister Pio Tikoduadua described the report as “very honest,” emphasizing that it reflects the public’s lack of trust in the government. He questioned what actions would be taken in response. Tikoduadua noted that the report includes over 20 recommendations and expressed confidence that the Coalition Government possesses the political will to implement them.
