Coup Conversations: Fiji’s Path to Constitutional Reform

Opposition Leader Inia Seruiratu has emphasized the necessity of a candid dialogue regarding the events surrounding the coups of 1987, 2000, and 2006 before initiating amendments to the 2013 Constitution.

He stated, “We need to understand what truly transpired and who was responsible for these incidents that have hindered Fiji’s development.”

Mr. Seruiratu suggested that such discussions are essential for achieving full transparency and reconciliation, aiming to eliminate the root causes of historical issues.

He highlighted that the insights of Professor Anthony James Regan, a constitutional expert from the Australian National University, shared during the Fiji National University’s Vice-Chancellor’s Leadership Seminar Series on August 1, have sparked significant support for a comprehensive review of Fiji’s 2013 Constitution.

He pointed out that Professor Regan’s arguments were echoed by fellow Opposition Member Viliame Naupoto in Parliament, who reiterated the call for constitutional review.

“A reformed constitution should reinforce the principle of popular sovereignty, which posits that the people are the ultimate source of authority, thereby giving them greater influence over their governance.”
