The final day of the Great Council of Chiefs (GCC) meeting focused on pressing issues affecting the iTaukei community, including violence against women, drug use, and school dropouts. GCC chair Ratu Viliame Seruvakula emphasized the need for these topics to be addressed, highlighting their significant impact on the community.
Ratu Viliame mentioned that domestic violence has become a major concern, with Fiji ranking alarmingly high globally for such incidents. Emotional speeches from council members fueled discussions about the need for serious action moving forward. He acknowledged that drug problems have infiltrated schools, raising further alarm among the leaders.
The discussion also touched on educational disparities, particularly in medical school graduation rates, where only 30% of iTaukei students graduate compared to 60% from other ethnic groups. Ratu Viliame urged for a collective effort in communal upbringing to nurture and support the youth.
He advocated for teachings rooted in unity and independence, stressing that children should be encouraged to look up and respect others. By fostering independence and resilience among youths, the community can better prepare them for future challenges.
As communities gather to address these significant issues, there is hope for positive change through collaborative efforts and a renewed focus on education and social support systems. Initiatives aimed at protecting vulnerable individuals and empowering the younger generation through education can pave the way for a more harmonious future.
