Corruption Investigation Unfolds in Fijian Schools

The Ministry of Education has reported instances of misappropriated funds within schools to the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC). These cases involve schools that received funding for various projects but failed to provide receipts, with many projects either incomplete or never initiated.

This information was disclosed by Ilisoni Waqa, Principal Education Officer at the Ministry of Education’s Assets and Infrastructure Services. Waqa stated, “We have referred cases for audit and FICAC is conducting interviews and requesting documents. We have been assisting them by providing the evidence they need to support their investigations and resolve these pending issues.”

When inquired about the specific number of schools referred to FICAC, he mentioned, “I don’t have the numbers with me, but I will get back to you,” and did not provide further details about the schools involved.

In related discussions, assistance was requested for completing a double-storey classroom at Nasoki Village. Waqa confirmed that help was given, yet the school did not submit any receipts for documentation.

He highlighted the necessity of utilizing government funds effectively and maintaining thorough records. “When funds are given to schools, we expect them to be used for their intended purpose. Schools with good records are more likely to receive funding for future projects,” Waqa noted. He urged schools to maintain accurate records of receipts for any utilized funds associated with projects.
