Corruption Clouds Fiji’s Electoral Landscape: What’s Next?

The Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) has forwarded a complaint involving its Commissioner, Barbara Malimali, to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecution (ODPP) for further evaluation. This action stems from allegations of Abuse of Office relating to Ms. Malimali’s previous role as the Electoral Chair with the Electoral Commission of Fiji (ECF).

Additionally, FICAC has confirmed that five cases previously referred by the Supervisor of Elections earlier in the year have been closed. The Supervisor of Elections was informed of these closures on July 24, 2024.

The closed cases include:
– Allegations of corrupt practices concerning the FijiFirst Party, specifically against the Fiji First Australia Association Incorporated, Mr. Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, and Tito Bainimarama.
– A complaint against Mr. Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum and Mr. Mohammed Saneem relating to collusion and conflict of interest, as well as Mr. Arif Ali for making a $10,000 donation to the FijiFirst Party while serving as a civil servant.
– Complaints involving His Excellency, The President of the Republic of Fiji, Ratu Wiliame Katonivere, Mr. Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, and Mr. Charan Jeath Singh.
– A complaint against Mr. Voreqe Bainimarama for submitting false declarations regarding Income, Assets, and Liabilities for the years 2014 to 2019 and 2022.
– A complaint against Mr. Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum for failing to declare overseas travel allowances.

As for other matters referred by the Supervisor of Elections, those investigations are still ongoing, and FICAC has stated that it will not comment until the inquiries are completed. The Commission has emphasized that it continues to operate normally, adhering to all processes and procedures while thoroughly investigating each complaint, regardless of the individual involved.
