Corruption Charges Loom Over Former Water Authority Engineer

The Magistrates Court has determined that Mohammed Shafraaz Ali, a former senior engineer at the Water Authority of Fiji, will face charges related to corruption. Ali is facing a bribery charge brought by the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption.

The allegations state that between March 1, 2017, and June 30, 2017, while serving as the Regional Engineer Bulk at WAF, Ali accepted an advantage in the form of a $1,430.60 return air ticket to Sydney, Australia, purchased for him by Sphynx Solutions Pte Limited on March 21, 2017, as a quid pro quo for performing a duty of his public service role.

Resident Magistrate Jeremaia Savou evaluated the arguments made by both sides and concluded that there is sufficient evidence for the case to proceed against Ali. The defense counsel requested additional time to gather more instructions from the client to clarify the next steps in the legal process.

The case has been postponed until September 19 for further mention.
