Corruption Charges Against Former Water Authority Engineer: Court Ruling Revealed

The Magistrates Court has determined that Mohammed Shafraaz Ali, a former senior engineer at the Water Authority of Fiji, faces charges related to corruption. The Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption has charged him with one count of bribery. According to allegations, between March 1 and June 30, 2017, while serving as Regional Engineer Bulk at WAF, Ali received a benefit in the form of a $1,430.60 return ticket from Fiji Airways to Sydney, Australia. This ticket was paid for by Sphynx Solutions Pte Limited on March 21, 2017, in exchange for an action he performed as a public servant. After reviewing submissions from both sides, Resident Magistrate Jeremaia Savou ruled that there is a case to be answered regarding the charges against Ali. The defense requested additional time to obtain further instructions from Ali to clarify their next steps. The case has been adjourned until September 19 for further proceedings.
