Corruption Chaos: FICAC’s New Boss Detained on First Day!

Attorney-General Graham Leung has defended the appointment of Barbara Malimali as Commissioner of the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC), stating that the process was conducted properly. Speaking to the media, Mr. Leung noted that Ms. Malimali was selected based on merit after being shortlisted among four other candidates.

Despite her recent appointment, Ms. Malimali is currently the subject of an active investigation by the country’s corruption watchdog. Mr. Leung emphasized the importance of filling the position, which had been vacant for several months. He clarified that under the Constitution, the head of FICAC is appointed by the Judicial Services Commission, which submits recommendations to the President.

However, the situation took a dramatic turn when Ms. Malimali was detained by her own staff for questioning related to an abuse of office allegation on her first day. Originally, the media was informed that Acting Deputy FICAC Commissioner Francis Pulewai would hold a press conference, which did not occur. Mr. Leung indicated that Ms. Pulewai had resigned and appeared to have authorized the detainment of Ms. Malimali.

He expressed concern about the severity of the FICAC’s actions, noting that such powers can restrict individual liberty and damage personal reputations. Mr. Leung was shocked by the unprecedented events, particularly as they unfolded on Ms. Malimali’s first day in her new role. He raised questions about the legality of the detention executed by her own staff.

In response, Ms. Pulewai defended her actions, asserting that she was following due process to uphold the rule of law in light of a corruption complaint against Ms. Malimali.
