Kalaveti Ravu, the former Minister for Fisheries and Forests, was absent from court during his corruption case proceedings at the Magistrates Court in Suva today. His lawyer, Jioji Cakau, informed the court that Ravu was attending Parliamentary duties in Nadi. However, State counsel Lavenia Ravuikadavu pointed out that they had not been notified about Ravu’s absence.
Also present in court was Tekata Toaisi, a former Regional Manager for Fisheries and Forests who is facing charges alongside Ravu. The allegations state that between July 25 and August 31, 2023, Ravu allegedly interfered with a legitimate investigation by the Ministry of Forestry regarding the illegal trade of banned species of beche-de-mer. Toaisi is accused of assisting Ravu in the alleged abuse of office.
The case is scheduled to be revisited on January 21.
This situation highlights the ongoing efforts to address issues of corruption and abuse of office in government. It is a reminder of the necessity for accountability in public service, which can ultimately lead to more transparent governance. Citizens may find hope in the judicial system’s commitment to pursuing justice, regardless of the stature of those involved.
