Kalaveti Ravu, the former Minister for Fisheries and Forests, was absent during his corruption case proceedings at the Suva Magistrates Court. His attorney, Jioji Cakau, explained to the court that Ravu was attending parliamentary duties in Nadi, although state counsel Lavenia Ravuikadavu pointed out that they had not received prior notification of his absence.
Alongside Ravu, Tekata Toaisi, the former Regional Manager for Fisheries and Forests in the North, was present in court. Both individuals face allegations related to interference in a Ministry of Forestry investigation regarding the illegal trade of banned species of beche-de-mer, which reportedly occurred between July 25 and August 31, 2023. The charges suggest that Ravu misused his office as the Minister for Fisheries, while Toaisi is accused of collaborating in this abuse.
The court has scheduled the next hearing for January 21.
It is essential to note how this situation reflects on the integrity of public office and the importance of accountability in government roles. The rescheduled court date provides an opportunity for clarity and justice in the case. Moreover, it signals to the public that legal processes are being upheld, reinforcing trust in the judicial system.
