Corrections Officer Caught Smuggling Drugs and Phones

The Fiji Corrections Service (FCS) has announced the arrest of a Corrections Officer Class (COC) who attempted to smuggle drugs and mobile phones into the Minimum Correction Centre during his second night shift.

The officer was caught with marijuana, two mobile phones without SIM cards, and an 80 cm length of suki tobacco during a routine shift change. He had been under suspicion for potentially acting as a conduit for inmates to receive contraband.

On the night of his second shift, the officer brought a bag which he left in the gatekeeper’s room. Assigned to guard the C dormitory, he was observed leaving his post at around 12:30 AM.

He was seen moving towards the segregation block to the guard room, where he retrieved two parcels containing marijuana and suki from his bag and concealed them in his pockets.

Officers monitoring his movements confronted him as he attempted to return to his post. Upon searching him, they confiscated the contraband and discovered the two mobile phones in his bag.

The officer was immediately detained and his statement recorded. He is currently held at the Emergency Control Unit (ECU) base awaiting further investigation and disciplinary action.

The FCS emphasizes its zero-tolerance policy toward misconduct and contraband smuggling, highlighting this incident as a testament to their commitment to the integrity and security of correctional facilities.

Further updates will be provided as the investigation continues.
