The Fiji Corrections Service has confirmed the arrest of a Corrections Officer caught attempting to smuggle illegal drugs and mobile phones into the Minimum Correction Centre during his night guard duty. The officer was found with marijuana, two mobile phones without SIM cards, and an 80 cm suki during a routine shift change.
There were prior suspicions that he may have been used by inmates to smuggle contraband into the facility. Other officers, who had been monitoring his movements, confronted him as he tried to return to his post. Upon searching him, they seized the contraband along with the two mobile phones found in his bag.
The officer was immediately taken into custody, and his statement was recorded. He is currently being held at the Emergency Control Unit base awaiting further investigation and will face disciplinary action. The Fiji Corrections Service emphasizes its zero-tolerance policy towards any misconduct and contraband smuggling within its facilities.
