A fierce debate has unfolded between Opposition MP Ketan Lal and Sugar Minister Charan Jeath Singh over their roles in the recent COP29 conference held in Baku, Azerbaijan. Both lawmakers were part of Fiji’s delegation at the summit, which wrapped up just yesterday.
The tension ignited when Minister Singh expressed on social media that many participants at COP29 failed to contribute meaningfully and were merely a drain on their nations’ resources. He advocated for a more streamlined delegation for future conferences, emphasizing the need for experts who can effectively convey their messages.
In response, Mr. Lal criticized Mr. Singh for what he deemed hypocritical behavior. He pointed out that Singh’s last-minute appointment to the delegation, coupled with his high travel costs and minimal involvement in the conference, represented a misuse of public funds. Mr. Lal remarked that Singh’s presence did not enhance Fiji’s contributions to the talks, adding that he traveled in luxury while taxpayers footed the bill.
Mr. Lal went on to assert that while other delegates were actively engaged in discussions, Singh seemed disoriented and uninvolved throughout the conference.
Minister Singh countered Mr. Lal’s claims, calling them unfounded and challenging his ability to represent Fiji on the international scene. He also accused Lal of being reliant on a political party’s support to secure his place in Parliament and suggested that Lal should reimburse the state for his travel expenses if he genuinely believed in his criticisms.
This exchange highlights the ongoing tensions within Fijian politics, particularly regarding representation at key international engagements. It also raises questions about the effectiveness of delegations and how they are composed for such significant discussions.
As Fiji navigates its international commitments, there is a hope that this controversy will lead to more scrutiny over delegation practices and encourage more transparent and accountable participation in global forums. This incident underscores the need for unity and purpose in representing national interests on the world stage.
