The Cook Islands Moana have been eliminated from contention for a World Cup spot following a 6-18 defeat to the Fiji Bulikula at the HFC Bank Stadium last Saturday. Head coach Rusty Matua expressed disappointment, stating that the Fijian team outperformed them in both attack and defense.

“We weren’t good enough; congratulations to the Bulikula, who were much stronger and maintained their momentum,” Matua stated. He noted that while the players showed effort, their skills did not meet expectations. Matua pointed out that despite a solid preparation for the Pacific Championship, they were caught off guard by the performance of the Bulikula.

“Fiji came prepared and demonstrated how to play, particularly in their dominance of the ruck,” he added.

Team captain Kiana Takairangi acknowledged the support of their fans despite the loss. “I spoke with some of our players and expressed my apologies, feeling I let my team down,” she remarked. Takairangi described the defeat as disappointing for both the team and the nation, uncertain if they would have another opportunity in the future.

She also shared her pride in captaining the Cook Islands Moana alongside her brother Brad Takairangi, who led the Cook Islands Aitu men’s team. “Being proud Cook Islanders and experiencing this together in Fiji is truly special,” she said.

Coach Matua expressed gratitude to the Fijian people for their warm hospitality during the competition. “We appreciate the NRL for establishing this tournament; it has been an honor and privilege to represent our heritage and Pacific culture,” he stated, extending his thanks to Fiji and the NRL.
