The Cook Islands Moana have been eliminated from contention for a World Cup spot following a 6-18 defeat to the Fiji Bulikula at HFC Bank Stadium last Saturday. Head coach Rusty Matua expressed that the Fijian team outperformed them in both offense and defense.

“We weren’t good enough, and congratulations to the Bulikula who were much stronger and we were unable to halt their momentum,” he stated. Matua noted that while the players displayed effort, their skills fell short. He pointed out that despite a solid preparation for the Pacific Championship, they were caught off guard by the Bulikula’s performance.

“Fiji showed us how to play rugby league, especially with their dominance in the ruck,” he added. Captain Kiana Takairangi shared her disappointment over the loss but was grateful for the support from fans in attendance. “I spoke to some of my teammates and apologized; I feel like I let my team down,” she said.

“It’s a disappointing loss for our team and our nation; we don’t know if we will have another opportunity, so we’ll wait and see.” Takairangi expressed pride in leading the Cook Islands Moana alongside her brother, Brad Takairangi, who captained the Cook Islands Aitu men’s team. “We’re very proud Cook Islanders, and it’s special to represent our nation at the same time here in Fiji,” she noted.

Coach Matua thanked the Fijian people for their hospitality and for being exemplary hosts. “We appreciate the NRL (National Rugby League) for establishing this competition; it has been an honor and a privilege for us to represent our heritage and Pacific culture,” he said, extending his gratitude to the Fijian people and the NRL.
