Controversy Erupts Over New FICAC Commissioner Amid Ongoing Investigations

Opposition MP Premila Kumar has expressed her surprise at the announcement of Barbara Malimali as the new Commissioner of the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC), particularly in light of the reports that Malimali is under investigation for alleged abuse of office.

Kumar described the confirmation of her appointment by the Judicial Services Commission (JSC) as “astonishing and unethical,” given that Malimali is being investigated by the very agency she is poised to lead.

She raised critical questions regarding the JSC’s awareness of the ongoing investigations, suggesting that they may have chosen to overlook them.

The MP highlighted serious concerns regarding the integrity and credibility of the appointment process and emphasized that public trust in FICAC’s ability to operate impartially could be compromised due to the allegations against its new head. Kumar insists that the public deserves transparency and accountability from those in power.

Furthermore, she has called on the Chair of the JSC to provide a thorough explanation regarding the decision-making process that led to this appointment, noting a lack of due diligence in such an important matter.

Kumar underscored that the people of Fiji deserve leadership from individuals with unquestionable integrity, urging those in authority to act in the nation’s best interests.
