Controversy Erupts Over FICAC Commissioner Appointment

Attorney General Graham Leung emphasized that due process was followed in the selection of Barbara Malimali as the new Commissioner of the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC).

Leung expressed his concern over Acting Deputy Commissioner Francis Pulewai potentially authorizing Malimali’s arrest, despite her official appointment.

He clarified that Malimali’s appointment was made by President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere, based on the advice of the Judicial Services Commission, in line with legal protocols.

Leung urged Pulewai to respect the appointment, noting that Malimali’s arrest is troubling, particularly as she was reportedly detained.

Additionally, Leung shared that all five members of the Electoral Commission had communicated their complete confidence in Malimali’s integrity to the Judicial Services Commission, deeming any claims of misconduct against her as unfounded.

However, he did not specify whether Malimali had resigned from her role as Chairperson of the Electoral Commission.

The Attorney General reiterated that the powers of FICAC should be exercised with caution and thoughtful consideration rather than in a reactive manner.
