Opposition Leader Inia Seruiratu has voiced his astonishment over the appointment of Barbara Malimali as the new commissioner of the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC). His reaction, shared in a statement from fellow Opposition MP Premila Kumar, highlighted concerns regarding the ethical implications of the appointment, particularly since Malimali is currently under investigation by the organization she is now set to lead.
Speaking to the media, Seruiratu remarked that the situation reflects poorly on the Government. “I’m shocked, but not surprised,” he stated, reiterating the Opposition’s long-standing concerns about good governance and institutional integrity. He clarified that the issue is not with the appointee herself, but rather with the appointing authority, underscoring that the Government should be held accountable.
Premila Kumar further demanded transparency from the Government regarding Malimali’s appointment, questioning whether the Judicial Services Commission (JSC) was aware of the ongoing investigations at the time of her appointment or if they chose to overlook them. She expressed worries about how the public can trust FICAC to fulfill its duties objectively with its leader facing serious allegations.
Kumar called for the chair of the JSC to provide a comprehensive explanation regarding the decision-making process behind this appointment, criticizing the apparent lack of due diligence in such a crucial role. On Tuesday, inquiries were directed to the JSC concerning the confirmation of Malimali’s position.
