An investigation will be launched by the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) to examine the actions of others, as stated by Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka. He clarified that this will not be a Board of Inquiry but rather a Commission Inquiry intended to understand the behaviors of individuals involved.
Rabuka emphasized that while certain decisions and processes cannot be altered, there may be individuals who have engaged in improper activities. He acknowledged concerns raised by critics regarding the circumstances surrounding Barbara Malimali’s resignation as chair of the Electoral Commission (EC) and her subsequent appointment as FICAC Commissioner.
The Prime Minister believes a thorough investigation is essential to uphold the integrity of the process. Opposition Leader Inia Seruiratu had previously questioned whether Malimali had officially resigned from the EC without informing the members of the Constitutional Offices Commission (COC), which is responsible for such appointments.
Rabuka, serving as the chair of the COC, confirmed that he was also unaware of Malimali’s resignation until informed by the COC secretariat ten days after she began her role at FICAC.
