Fiji men’s sevens forward Kavekini Tanivanuakula remains a contender for the upcoming Perth 7s despite facing charges related to drink driving. Head coach Osea Kolinisau confirmed this during the squad’s training session and noted that Tanivanuakula joined his teammates as they trained for the McDonalds Fiji Coral Coast 7s tournament scheduled for next week.
Tanivanuakula made his debut for the national team at the Dubai 7s last month and also participated in the Cape Town leg. He was arrested for alleged drink driving at a checkpoint in Nadi on December 14 and is set to appear in the Nadi Magistrate’s Court on February 17, 2025.
Kolinisau emphasized the importance of decision-making and responsible behavior, particularly for Tanivanuakula as he steps into a role of influence within the team. He pointed out that representing Fiji carries significant responsibility and that Tanivanuakula has shown a willingness to learn from his past mistakes. The coach noted that there have been positive changes in the player’s attitude and perspective.
The focus on maintaining high standards of conduct within the team is essential, as Kolinisau highlighted the team’s role as role models for younger generations. He reiterated the importance of kindness, respect, and responsibility in their conduct both on and off the field.
The final team for the Perth 7s will be named following the conclusion of the three-day Coral Coast tournament, with the Perth 7s scheduled for January 24-26.
This situation serves as a reminder of the importance of accountability and the capacity for personal growth, showcasing that even young athletes can learn valuable lessons from their experiences.
