Controversial Appointment Sparks Outrage in Fiji’s Political Landscape

Opposition MP Premila Kumar expressed her shock over the appointment of Electoral Commission Chairperson Barbara Malimali to the new Commission of the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC). In a statement, Kumar described the move as astonishing and unethical, emphasizing that the Judicial Services Commission (JSC) confirmed an appointment for someone currently under investigation by the very organization she is set to lead.

Kumar questioned whether the JSC was unaware of the ongoing investigations or if they chose to disregard them. She expressed that this situation raises significant concerns regarding the integrity and credibility of the appointment process.

She argued that public confidence in FICAC’s ability to perform its responsibilities impartially is jeopardized when its leader is involved in serious allegations. Kumar insisted that the public deserves transparency and accountability from those in positions of power.

The Opposition MP called on the Chair of the Judicial Services Commission to provide a thorough explanation regarding the decision-making process behind the appointment and the apparent lack of due diligence. Kumar concluded that the people of Fiji deserve better leadership and that it is crucial for authorities to act in the nation’s best interest with leaders of unquestionable integrity.

FijiLive has also sought a statement from the Chairperson of the Judicial Services Commission, Justice Salesi Temo.
