Opposition MP Premila Kumar has expressed her shock at the appointment of Electoral Commission Chairperson Barbara Malimali to the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC). In her statement, Kumar described this decision as both astonishing and unethical, as Malimali is currently under investigation by the very organization she is set to lead.
Kumar questioned whether the Judicial Services Commission (JSC) was aware of these ongoing investigations or if they chose to overlook them, raising significant concerns about the integrity and credibility of the appointment process. She emphasized the need for public confidence in FICAC’s ability to fulfill its mandate impartially, particularly when its leader is facing serious allegations.
Kumar has called for the Chair of the Judicial Services Commission to provide a thorough explanation regarding the decision-making process behind this appointment, suggesting that due diligence may not have been adequately conducted. She stated that the people of Fiji deserve better leadership and that it is crucial for those in power to act in the national interest, ensuring that institutions are led by individuals of unquestionable integrity.
FijiLive has also made inquiries with Justice Salesi Temo, the Chairperson of the Judicial Services Commission, regarding this matter.
