The Minister for Lands and Mineral Resources, Filimoni Vosarogo, has announced plans for open consultations with landowners in Vanua Levu and Namosi to occur before the end of this month. The consultations will address ongoing issues related to the Mt Kasi Gold Mine and the mataqali Nabukebuke in Namosi.
In light of the government’s decision to retain the current contractor at the Mt Kasi Gold Mine, despite requests from landowners for a different operator, Mr. Vosarogo has emphasized the importance of open dialogue. “The Government has made its decision, and I will be visiting with the landowners before the end of the month to discuss the processes that will follow these consultations,” he stated.
Mr. Vosarogo is particularly focused on engaging with the mataqali Nabukebuke regarding the contentious special prospecting license (SPL), an initiative that the landowning unit has strongly opposed. He reiterated the necessity of discussions to address concerns and foster understanding. “These things need to be discussed as part of a dialogue; they’ve been very strong in their opposition to the SPL being renewed,” he remarked, advocating for a platform where the landowners can express their fears and receive reassurance.
Furthermore, he highlighted the government’s responsibility to engage with the community actively, emphasizing that such engagements aim to alleviate concerns while also paving the way for job creation and sustainable income through developments in the mineral sector.
This proactive approach reflects a commitment to improved communication and partnership between the government and the landowners, signaling a potential shift towards more inclusive governance in the management of natural resources in Fiji. By prioritizing these consultations, there is a hopeful opportunity for a more constructive relationship that not only addresses local concerns but also promotes economic development and community involvement.
