Calls for Constitutional Reform: Is Change on the Horizon for Fiji?

Constitutional Reforms: A Call for Inclusivity and Flexibility in Governance

Independent MP Sachida Nand has passionately articulated the need for constitutional flexibility during a parliamentary session, insisting that constitutions should not be rigid and unmodifiable. He supports proposed changes to Chapter 11 of the 2013 Constitution, arguing that it must evolve to address the changing needs of society effectively.

Nand asserted, “A constitution should be able to be amended as and when the need arises, and the process of amending it should be accessible to all citizens, not just a select few.” He emphasized the importance of inclusivity in governance, proposing that the amendment process genuinely involve public participation, ensuring that citizen feedback plays a vital role in any alterations made.

Additionally, Nand criticized the current Constitution for being framed by an elite minority, advocating instead for a “living, breathing document” that can dynamically respond to societal changes. He challenged those who exploit public fears for political gain, urging them to stop misleading ordinary Fijians.

This call for inclusivity resonates with sentiments from other lawmakers, as discussions have emerged surrounding the 2013 Constitution. Minister Filimoni Vosarogo has also expressed concerns about the Constitution’s representativeness, stressing the need for a document that embodies the collective will of the people instead of catering only to a privileged few.

As debates progress, there is hope for a governance framework that fosters unity and accurately reflects the aspirations of all Fijians. The ongoing discussions underscore the significance of civic participation in democracy, paving the way for promising constitutional reforms that advocate for greater representation and inclusivity in political processes. This optimistic outlook indicates a collective commitment towards a more accessible and responsive governance model.
