Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has acknowledged the request from the Great Council of Chiefs (GCC) for a thorough review of the 2013 Constitution. In a recent media briefing, he stated that the conclusions from the GCC’s meeting, which occurred two weeks ago at the Grand Pacific Hotel, have yet to be presented to the Cabinet for approval.
Rabuka mentioned that the Minister for i-Taukei Affairs, Ifereimi Vasu, submitted a Cabinet Paper to the GCC during that meeting. However, he has not yet received any feedback regarding the GCC’s recommendation for a review. The Prime Minister expressed his intent to await the GCC Secretariat’s proposal before taking any action, emphasizing his commitment to carrying out the recommendations put forth by the GCC.
During the same meeting, GCC Chair Ratu Viliame Seruvakula advocated for constitutional amendments, stating that this resolution was made on the first day. Seruvakula highlighted the importance of amending laws that impact the i-Taukei community, asserting that the only pathway to this change is through adjustments to the Constitution.
This development shows an ongoing engagement between the government and traditional leadership structures, reinforcing the significance of dialogue in influencing democratic processes. As the situation progresses, it holds the potential to enhance representation and support the legislative framework that addresses the needs of the i-Taukei community.
Overall, while the process may be slow, the emphasis on listening to community leaders and considering their recommendations could foster positive change and strengthen governance in Fiji.
