Former MP Tanya Waqanika has voiced her full support for Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka’s efforts to expand his support base in Parliament as he seeks to amend the 2013 Constitution. Waqanika expressed confidence in the Prime Minister’s political acumen, stating, “He knows what he is doing. He is politically savvy,” reinforcing that if additional support is necessary to achieve this constitutional revision, it is appropriate to pursue it.
Last week, during a media conference, Prime Minister Rabuka revealed that although his Coalition Government currently holds around 70 percent of the 55 votes in Parliament, they are still four votes shy of the 75 percent majority required for constitutional amendments. Specifically, the government needs 42 votes, indicating a significant challenge in the amendment process given that the opposition holds 16 votes.
Rabuka highlighted the importance of the Constitution as it relates to governance, stating it defines the powers of the state and protects citizens’ rights. He emphasized the necessity for a constitutional framework that represents Fiji’s diverse and multicultural society. The Prime Minister reiterated his commitment to working within constitutional and legal parameters to achieve these objectives, while also promoting democracy and good governance principles.
Despite the challenges ahead, Rabuka maintains an optimistic outlook, viewing the current political climate as an opportunity for meaningful engagement with stakeholders and the public to foster an inclusive dialogue. His vision is geared towards creating a Constitution that truly aligns with the aspirations of all Fijians, promoting unity within the nation.
In summary, while the path to constitutional reform in Fiji is complex and fraught with challenges, the proactive approach of engaging and rallying support could lead to a more representative and harmonious governance framework. There remains hope that through continued dialogue and cooperation, the constitutional amendments will serve the interests of all citizens, paving the way for a brighter future for Fiji.
