Former Opposition Leader Mick Beddoes has emphasized that the review of Fiji’s 2013 Constitution is a crucial opportunity to address past injustices and flaws. Beddoes believes that despite the acknowledged complexities of altering the current Constitution, it is essential for restoring democratic integrity and ensuring a fair governance framework. He continues to advocate for the reinstatement of the 1997 Constitution, referencing the historical context where many Fijians were disregarded during the drafting process of previous documents.
“The last time Fijians freely participated in a Constitutional process was 13 years ago,” Beddoes remarked, recalling how the 2013 Constitution was imposed by the Bainimarama regime, which disregarded a previously drafted ‘People’s Constitution’ proposed by Professor Yash Ghai. This event underscored a lack of genuine participation and respect for public opinion in constitutional matters.
Beddoes believes it is vital to establish a strong foundation for the future governance of Fiji, one that prevents any future leaders from altering political paths through undemocratic means. His sentiments echo a growing call for a comprehensive review process that engages citizens meaningfully, as articulated by various political voices, including current concerns raised by independent MPs and the Leader of the Opposition, Inia Seruiratu.
Building on the momentum for constitutional reform, recent discussions have included the necessity of fostering national dialogue to address historical grievances arising from Fiji’s political upheavals, particularly those of 1987, 2000, and 2006. This dialogue aims not only to understand the past but also to create a governance system that upholds the principles of democracy and human rights.
The impending review of the Constitution is framed as a hopeful step toward a more inclusive and representative governance structure in Fiji. As political leaders and citizens engage in this vital process, there is potential for robust changes that prioritize the populace’s needs and aspirations, ultimately shaping a more democratic future for the nation.
