Viliame Naupoto, the Opposition Whip of the group 9-bloc, is set to deliver a statement in Parliament at the end of the week regarding the review of the 2013 Constitution. This announcement comes from Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, who addressed questions about the government’s plans concerning the constitutional review.
Rabuka acknowledged the remarks made by Professor Anthony Regan from the Australian National University during a recent seminar hosted by the Vice-Chancellor of Fiji National University in Nasinu. Regan indicated that maintaining the current form of Fiji’s Constitution was not a viable option.
Rabuka clarified that Regan’s comments were his personal views rather than an official lecture. He noted that the government would take into account several points from Regan’s address as they work on the constitutional review.
He emphasized that they will await Naupoto’s upcoming statement before gathering further insights. The government intends to engage with the public to solicit their opinions on the constitutional review, either through a referendum or by encouraging submissions.
Rabuka mentioned that there would be an additional parliamentary session later in the year to further discuss the matter and that a resolution would be tabled to initiate the review process.
