At the recent annual general meeting of Amalgamated Telecom Holdings (ATH) held in Suva, a shareholder from Vanuabalavu in the Lau group highlighted the ongoing network issues faced by islanders, which have hindered their access to global markets. The shareholder expressed concerns about poor connectivity, which limits communication and business opportunities for the local community.

ATH’s CEO, Ivan Fong, acknowledged the challenges of rural connectivity, noting that the government’s universal service obligation plays a crucial role in facilitating telecom services in Fiji. Fong explained that a Universal Service Fund, managed by the Telecommunications Authority of Fiji (TAF), is used to prioritize and allocate funds for needed improvements in connectivity, following discussions with provincial councils.

In recent years, the efforts to enhance connectivity have been constrained by the high costs involved, but Fong mentioned the emergence of Starlink and other satellite technologies as a potential solution for rural areas. Discussions are currently underway with the government to identify nearly 300 villages and communities in need of improved service, with telecom operators like Telecom, Vodafone, and Digicel expressing their commitment to participate in efforts to connect these underserved areas.

During the AGM, FY2024 results were also discussed, with ATH reporting a net profit after tax of $9.2 million from a revenue of $936 million. A final dividend of three cents per share was approved, totaling $14.357 million, along with the reelection of director Peter Chan and BDO Chartered Accountants as independent auditor.

This proactive approach by ATH, alongside potential technological advancements, offers hope for improved connectivity in rural regions, which can empower local communities and better integrate them into the global economy. As discussions continue and operators collaborate on solutions, there is optimism that progress will be made towards narrowing the connectivity gap in Fiji’s rural areas.
