Opposition MP Jone Usamate has expressed significant concerns regarding the operation of Government vehicles on Fiji’s roads, emphasizing the lack of adherence to road rules. In a statement, Usamate pointed out that issues like speeding and improper overtaking by government vehicles pose considerable risks to the safety of all road users.

He noted that vehicles are being equipped with rotating flashing lights during non-emergency situations, calling this practice a violation of the law. Usamate emphasized that these vehicles are vital government assets meant to support the provision of public services.

Additionally, he alleged that government cars are often kept at private residences and community police stations during both weekdays and weekends, contrary to the Government’s Transport Policy. He quoted the policy, which mandates that vehicles should be parked at official agency garages at the end of each business day and on weekends, except in cases where prior authorization has been granted.

Usamate highlighted that during peak travel times in the mornings, many government vehicles are frequently seen commuting from private homes to offices while picking up officials along the way. He reiterated that the policy states only Permanent Secretaries are entitled to use government vehicles, urging for an end to these practices, which he claims could severely deplete public resources.

FijiLive has reached out to the Ministry of Finance, Transport, and Logistics for comment on the matter.
