The Fiji Police Force has reported a total of 63 suicide cases in 2024 so far, slightly down from 66 cases during the same period last year. Additionally, there have been 44 attempted suicide cases, compared to 47 in the previous year, as recorded from January 1 to August 22.
Of those impacted by suicide, eight cases involved individuals under the age of 18, while those over 60 years of age made up the highest demographic, with 19 suicide cases and two attempted suicides. The majority of reported cases, totaling 50, occurred among males.
Acting Commissioner of Police Sakeo Raikaci expressed deep concern over these alarming statistics, highlighting the need to address growing social issues. He emphasized the importance of fostering a culture of acceptance and understanding within the community and urged leaders to contribute to changing the narrative surrounding mental health.
“We need to nurture a more understanding and supportive culture of acceptance and create safe spaces to talk. As we deal with modern challenges of policing, another challenge is the issue of cyberbullying, and we encourage Fijians to be more caring in the virtual world,” ACP Raikaci stated.
Factors associated with suicide and attempted suicide cases include spousal disputes, family disagreements, relationship issues, stress, and health concerns. In conjunction with these findings, the theme for World Suicide Prevention Day 2024 is “Changing the Narrative with the Call to Start the Conversation.”
