Concern Over Controversial Appointment in Justice System

Premila Kumar, an Opposition Member of Parliament, has expressed significant concern over the appointment of John Rabuku as the Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions. She pointed out that Rabuku had previously faced suspension and a fine for professional misconduct issued by the Independent Legal Services Commission.

Kumar emphasized that the situation is particularly troubling given that the newly appointed Attorney General, the government’s primary legal adviser, has endorsed this appointment. She noted that this selection was not made by the Judicial Services Commission or the Attorney General’s office.

“This situation raises serious questions regarding the integrity and credibility of our justice system,” Kumar stated. “It highlights the lowering of standards for a rigorous vetting process to assess past disciplinary records.”

She warned that such appointments could harm public trust in legal and prosecutorial processes. Kumar questioned whether the vetting for this crucial position was conducted thoroughly and transparently. “Bringing in someone with a questionable background sends a negative message to the public, indicating that ethical standards are no longer a priority in our legal institutions,” she remarked.

Kumar further asked how the public could be expected to uphold the rule of law when those tasked with enforcing it seem to have compromised their own standards. She raised concerns about possible favoritism, questioning whether this appointment was influenced by connections and loyalties, particularly in light of Rabuku’s previous role in promoting the current Acting DPP upon his resignation.

She concluded by pointing out the disparity in hiring requirements, noting that anyone applying for a civil service position typically undergoes rigorous police and character checks, which seemingly was overlooked in this case. Kumar emphasized that the implications of this appointment are critical for the future of the justice system and underscored the need for a thorough examination to prevent further erosion of public confidence in legal institutions.
