A clean-up campaign along Koronivia Road in Nausori resulted in the collection of 596 kilograms of waste and recyclables in just one day. This initiative, organized by the Pacific Recycling Foundation (PRF) in collaboration with Waste Recyclers Fiji Limited (WRFL), Malhana Cloud Kitchen, the Koronivia Business Council (KBC), and local residents, managed to gather 500 kilograms of general waste, 60 kilograms of PET bottles, and 36 kilograms of aluminum cans.
Amitesh Deo, the founder of PRF, stressed the significance of shared responsibility in managing waste. He remarked, “The large amount of waste we collected within just two hours underscores the urgent need for everyone to move away from a throwaway culture and take responsibility for their waste. We must all pledge to maintain Koronivia’s cleanliness for future generations.”
The clean-up revealed a considerable amount of household waste and recyclables, including items like baby diapers, PET bottles, construction debris, beer bottles and cans, takeaway food containers, clothing, razors, and cartons filled with unused goods. Mr. Deo noted that these items had been obstructing drains following recent grass-cutting conducted by the Fiji Roads Authority along the roadside.
He expressed regret that their team could not collect all the garbage in the area, as they could not access the saturated drains due to the potential hazards posed by sharp or harmful objects.
