President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere has called on Naitasiri’s paramount chief, Ratu Inoke Takiveikata, to take strong measures to safeguard his community from the escalating issue of illicit drug use. During the Naitasiri Provincial Council meeting held in Tamavua Village, Suva, he voiced his worries about the rising prevalence of drug use nationwide.
Ratu Wiliame emphasized the need for collective efforts to improve the province, urging the vanua to work closely with the youth and local communities to combat the various social challenges confronting society. He expressed his deep concern for the youth, noting the harmful impact of drugs, and called for unity to ensure that both the vanua and the church collaborate effectively to protect the younger generation.
He advocated for the reinforcement of cultural values and respect within families and the community, stressing the importance of young people learning to honor their elders. In addition, Ratu Wiliame urged support for school dropouts to enroll in technical schools, which he believes are vital for overcoming social challenges and contributing to community development.
He pointed out that it is crucial for everyone to take responsibility rather than shift blame to others. Ratu Wiliame highlighted the necessity for a detailed village profile initiative to enable the government to provide focused assistance for the people of Naitasiri.
Furthermore, he encouraged the community to take steps against Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) by adopting healthier diets. He referenced Ministry of Health statistics indicating that 80 percent of deaths are attributed to NCDs and urged the province to consider proactive solutions.
Ratu Wiliame urged everyone to reflect on traditional lifestyles and dietary practices, advocating for a return to consuming locally grown food.
