Community Rallies to Support Family After Devastating Whirlwind Disaster

Setariki Matanidaku, a resident of Sarava in Labasa, is seeking assistance after a powerful whirlwind struck his home on Monday afternoon, causing extensive damage. The whirlwind, which occurred at approximately 4 PM, was a rare event that left Mr. Matanidaku’s three-bedroom house significantly destroyed, tearing off the roofing and collapsing the side walls. The incident led to the loss of many household items and clothing, leaving the family in dire need.

At 45 years old, Mr. Matanidaku has spent his life contributing to his community and is now calling on local residents for support in rebuilding his home. “I have been a community man all my life, and now it’s the community’s turn to help,” he expressed, acknowledging the challenge ahead with a hopeful spirit. Currently, he and his family are temporarily sheltered with relatives nearby.

The estimated cost for repairs is around $50,000, a significant amount for the family, as Mr. Matanidaku works modestly as a cane farmer. Despite retrieving some roofing iron, he noted that much of it is bent and unusable. “We lost everything in the wind; the only clothes left were those we had on that day,” he lamented.

Similar incidents have resonated within the community, where other families have faced devastating losses due to natural disasters, underscoring the importance of communal support. Families in the region have had to band together during times of crisis, creating a spirit of solidarity and hope. Donations in cash or building materials are urgently needed to aid in the reconstruction efforts, and those interested in helping can get in touch directly with Mr. Matanidaku.

This situation showcases not only the adversity faced by individuals like Mr. Matanidaku but also the resilience of the community, which comes together to support those in need during challenging times.
